Creating a successful Homestay
Key Tips for Hosting Success
1. Set Clear Goals and Plan Ahead
- Think about what you want from the Homestay experience and set realistic expectations.
- Decide how many guests you can comfortably accommodate. Our Homestay team will discuss this with you on inspection of your accommodation.
- Be practical about the type of breakfast or amenities you can provide while maintaining quality.
- Familiarise yourself with the Homestay Host Information Pack to ensure you can meet and sustain cleanliness and quality standards.
2. Deliver Outstanding Quality and Cleanliness
Cleanliness is a non-negotiable aspect of a successful Homestay. We receive very few complaints, however, the majority of guest complaints we do receive are related to poor cleanliness or low-quality standards.
- High Standards of Cleanliness: Every corner of your home should feel fresh and welcoming, with particular attention given to the kitchen, living area, bedrooms & bathrooms.
- Quality Fixtures and Fittings: Many hosts take this opportunity to upgrade any tired furnishings and amenities.
- Comfort and Practicality: Ensure your spaces are comfortable, functional, and inviting.
- Excellent Presentation: Small touches, like fresh flowers or neatly arranged guest areas, go a long way.
3. Emphasise Exceptional Customer Service
In tourism, great customer service is essential—it directly affects your guests’ overall impression of the Isle of Man.
- Be welcoming: We recommend trying to get to know your guests before they arrive on the Island. Building a relationship with your guests is a great way to ensure that all parties are comfortable. Try to video call your guests, smile, make eye contact, and show genuine enthusiasm for hosting as this can go a long way.
- Be helpful: Ensure your guests have everything they need, from local tips to practical support. An abundance of free information can be found at the Visitors Centre located in the Sea Terminal.
- Think like a guest: Step outside your home and view it through the eyes of someone new. What small enhancements could make their stay even better?
4. Offer Flexibility
Many visitors come to the island for short breaks, and flexibility is key to attracting more bookings.
- Be adaptable with check-in and check-out times when possible.
- Offer tailored options for breakfast or services to suit varying guest needs.
Creating a Memorable Stay
For many, coming to the Island to watch the races is something to tick off the bucket list so hosts should strive to provide an experience that you would appreciate as a guest. Every detail matters when ensuring your visitors feel valued and welcome.
